DELMARVA- One pedal at a time.
Delmarva bicycle shops are doing their best to weather the pandemic, but the shortage of new bikes is not helping.
“Well, we have a really hard time getting bikes in and used a lot of older bikes and we can’t get the new ones that everyone wants, so that’s a bit of a problem,” Dylan Hoffman, vice- Senior President of Atlantic Cycles, mentioned.
We’re told it’s something they see at a bicycle shop in Rehoboth and Salisbury.
COVID-19 has put many operations on hiatus causing delays in what they are getting.
“The product is created in Asia to be shipped to the United States, but there is no vessel to put it in place as they are all linked to the supply chain,” said Buzz Carragher, owner of Salisbury. Cycle and Fitness.
“One of my main suppliers, a giant bicycle company, produces 3.5 million bikes a year, I was told my stock would not be full until February of next year,” Carragher said.
And these delays force people to take a different path.
“There is a high demand for new bikes, but when they realize they can’t get one and it may be 6 months before we get them, they fix their old bike, so our Repair activity was significant, ”Carragher said.
“We get a lot of older Walmart bikes and people are like everything, I guess I’ll just pay to fix it,” Hoffman said.
To add to all this, the bike shops told us that bringing in products to fix the bikes is also something they deal with.
“We’re not able to get parts really anymore, I mean the same companies that make the bikes sell the parts, so the shipping companies are disrupted so the parts are in the same ship as the bikes,” said Hoffman.
“Last summer I had to resort to repairing the inter tubes, which I haven’t had to do in years because we couldn’t replace the inter tubes,” Carragher said.
While COVID-19 has had an impact on the bikes these companies get and how they operate, they continue to spin and advance the wheels.
“It’s going to get back on track, but it will probably be months before we can get back to some sort of normal cycling operation,” Carragher said.
