State Senator Mike Martucci, R-New Hampton, my State Senator, a heroic reverse Robin Hood! He wrote me a letter. Senate Bill S.436 will eliminate property taxes for those over 60 years of age. It’s me ! Well, I like to pay less, but this lousy bill ELIMINATES the taxes that pay my grandnephew’s schools in Middleburgh and Manhattan, libraries, community centers, road crews, etc.
But wait, the bill forces “the state” to make the city money. Where will the “state” find the dough? Cuts to world-class recreation in Minnewaska or Norrie Point? Cups at SUNY New Paltz where my daughter gets a great education at a modest price? Reductions in the remuneration of soldiers, after having finished thanking them for being “on the front line” through COVID?
Oh no. Mike has the answer! His bill will be paid by cuts to Medicaid! Claiming to help “seniors in difficulty”, this program only helps those, rich or in difficulty, with home ownership. Worse, I would pay the same price as Robert DeNiro in Gardiner: ZERO. Go on! Robert and I can do our part!
To help seniors, including Robert, Mike will cut Medicaid, which serves approximately 470,000 REALLY struggling seniors (https://www.health.ny.gov/statistics/health_care/medicaid/eligible_expenditures/el2013/2013-cy_enrollees .htm). Maybe Mike likes senior votes so much that he’ll only cut Medicaid to 2,000,000 children? Or simply make cuts impacting the 200,000 blind and disabled?
To reduce Medicaid spending, let Medicare negotiate drug prices nationwide. Raise income taxes, based on ability to pay, to lower property taxes. DO NOT ELIMINATE taxes on second homes and mansions. “No thanks” to shell game 436, Mike.
