Police: High school exchange student charged with threatening to make gun from parts bought online

UPPER DARBY, Pa .– Police have announced new developments regarding the student arrested last week for allegedly threatening to shoot Bonner Prendergast High Schools.

Upper Darby police now say the teenager also had a gun and more than 1,600 rounds.

Police Commissioner Michael Chitwood said disaster was averted. He said what amazed him was that an exchange student, who had only been in the United States since August, was able to craft the handgun and obtain the ammunition for purchases made in line.

Investigators previously found a high powered crossbow and military-style vest while investigating An Tso Sun, 18, an exchange student from Taiwan attending Monsignor Bonner High School.

But on Monday, police announced the discovery of the gun and a stockpile of bullets.

Chitwood unveiled the find: a 9mm handgun and hundreds of rounds, including bullets for an AR-15 and AK-47.

Police said Sun warned a student that he would carry out a school shooting on May 1. Police began to investigate and first found a military-style vest, crossbow and other equipment inside Sun’s home at Lansdowne.

“There’s no doubt in our mind that he was up to something,” Chitwood said.

Investigators said the bag containing the ammunition and the handgun was removed from Lansdowne’s house before police searched the house.

“This relative then went to his room, from the house he was in, loaded all the things into the bag and took out the bag,” Chitwood said.
Chitwood wouldn’t say where this host relative got the gun and ammo. The host relative has not been charged, but police say the investigation is ongoing.

“Is there anything more than what we have?” Are there other people involved than him? said Chitwood.

Sun is still only accused of making terrorist threats. Police say he didn’t break any laws by having guns and ammunition, even though he is an exchange student.
