The pruning mechanism is now live Pokemon GO. This new mechanic, introduced this weekend as part of the second part of the Halloween 2021 event, is impacting two species so far, but may roll out to others in the future. Let’s see what exactly this mechanic does and how it applies to both Pumpkaboo and its evolution, Gourgeist.
As I pointed out when it was originally announced in Pokemon GO:
The new size mechanic in Pokémon GO will tie into the release of Pumpkaboo and its Gourgeist evolution. Here’s what Niantic has to say about this mechanic coming to the game:
With the introduction of Pumpkaboo comes a new mechanic for Pokémon GO: Pumpkaboo that is bigger will actually look bigger in-game!
Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist will be available in:
At the time, I had speculated that these would be treated the same as the various forms in the Pokédex. It turned out to be true. Just as you will see different levels in the Giratina entry for its modified form and its original form, you will see the four different sizes as levels in the Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist entries.
Now, it’s important to understand that this size mechanic is different from the size/weight shown earlier for Pokemon. For example, there are in-game badges for catching a certain number of “small Rattata” and “big Magikarp”. This ranking is not impacted at all by the new size mechanic. So far, this mechanism has an impact alone Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist. However, it will be interesting to see if Pokemon GO plans to extend this new mechanism in any way.
There is currently a live Pumpkaboo Collecting Challenge in-game as part of the second part of the Halloween 2021 event which tasks the player with catching one of each size Pumpkaboo available. These are all available in the wild during the event and are quite plentiful. Good luck to everyone working on this challenge!
