Watch Salt And Sacrifice’s giant mage boss get shrunk to size

Salt And Sacrifice is a “soulslike”, which is Latin for “Can you do this track for me?” The 2D slasher sequel to Salt And Sanctuary was only announced a few weeks ago, but there’s already more to see. Here’s nearly 10 minutes of footage from the upcoming game, showing off blocks, chops, and the cool power of friendship.

A quick recap: In Salt And Sacrifice, you are a marked inquisitor who hunts mages. They summon all the baddies that pollute the levels. You are there to cut everything into small pieces until you get to the boss.

One of the definitions of a similar soul is that the player works things out as they go, and so this sequence doesn’t make it easy for the viewer to follow. It’s a collection of moments as far as I can tell, but it’s probably a decent representation of the difficult nature of exploration. There’s a hilarious, fast-paced trap at 1:45, followed by a giant, beautifully animated knight boss at 3 minutes.

This boss fight shows a fair amount of blocking, dodging, and slashing. There are plenty of well-timed blocks, and a few less well-timed ones that confuse the player. There’s a lot going on, and every hit and block feels important in the grand scheme of things.

Summoning is not limited to the boss. Near the end of the sequence, another player is welcomed into the game with a nice handshake, and the two set out to fight and chase a mage through the level. The giant boss is capable of teleporting great distances, which means the team must hunt the vanishing thing in multiple areas. I’d be happy to have a friend with me for the ride, because it looks pretty damn exhausting.

We don’t have a release date, other than 2022.
