Waterloo International Airport expansion underway, to double in size


The Region of Waterloo said shovels had entered the ground at Waterloo International Airport for an expansion project that will double its size.

The region said it will be completed within the next six months as it expects passenger traffic at the airport to top one million next year, up from 70,000 passengers in 2019.

“The airline partners recently announced an increase in destinations and frequency of flights, which will take the airport to the next level of world-class service. It will also provide more opportunities for the Region in terms of jobs and economic expansion.

The expansion costs $11 million and will complete the airport terminal expansion as two buildings will be constructed which will include baggage carousels, waiting areas, food services, retail stores and screening. pre-boarding.

The region said more than 100 jobs have been added to the airport since Flair Airlines began operating from it in May.

Other major airlines offering occasional service from the airport include Westjet, which offers weekly service to Calgary, and Sunwing, which will offer weekly flights to Cancun, starting in December.

The region said the expansion will create jobs while attracting more businesses in the future.
