Winter travel advisory issued for Toronto and parts of eastern GTA

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for Toronto and parts of the eastern GTA, with snowfall expected to impact evening travel.

The weather agency issued the advisory for Toronto, Pickering, Oshawa and southern Durham Region, warning of snowfall peaks of one to two centimeters per hour and a total of 5 to 10 cm of here Monday night.

Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell said it was a “rare lake-enhanced snowfall for GTA Central and East”.

“An Alberta mower is moving across southern Ontario today bringing a general snowfall of 2-4cm, but higher amounts are expected near the shore of Lake Ontario where up to 10cm is likely,” he said.

“From Toronto, to Oshawa and up to Richmond Hill, locally 10 cm of snow falling in a short time during the evening drive is causing significant problems on the roads.

“Many accidents have already been reported and again the plows are struggling to keep up with snow falling at the rate of 1-2cm per hour. This doesn’t compare to the 5-10cm per hour amounts from last Monday’s blizzard, but it’s still enough to cause major disruptions.

Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed a snow-covered 401 freeway in parts of North York, Scarborough and Durham Region around 3:30 p.m.

Farnell said the snow will reduce to light showers by midnight.

He added that the “very cold” temperatures will remain in place for at least the next week, meaning the snow won’t be melting anytime soon.
